Finnish utility expands smart metering with Landis+Gyr AMM solution

Based on the Finnish government regulation, 80 percent of electricity meters should be remotely read by the end of 2013. Järvi-Suomen Energia has decided to implement an Advanced Metering Management (AMM) solution to all of its 100, 000 customers in order to gain the best possible AMM benefits.

“Landis+Gyr was able to offer us an extensive solution package, which corresponded best to all our requirements. We will now continue our good cooperation together. A long term contract brings benefits to both end customers and utility processes,” says Arto Pajunen, CEO, Järvi-Suomen Energia Oy. “Finnish company Suur-Savon Sähkötyö will install the meters, while Landis+Gyr is in charge of the management of mass installations,” Pajunen continues.

AMM solution delivery and meter reading service
AMM solution and project management is carried out by Landis+Gyr. Gridstream AIM system implementation, training, and the integration of customer data and energy data management control systems will be carried out by Landis+Gyr and its partner companies. Landis+Gyr‘s Gridstream solution also offers Järvi-Suomen Energia a meter reading service. This provides hourly metering data to the utility’s data management system once a day.

Advanced smart meters
In addition to reading service and system delivery, the contract also includes Landis+Gyr’s E450 multi-energy meters. The advanced smart meter offers flexibility to Järvi-Suomen Energia Oy: it uses open and interoperable standards for communication technology and is configured for flexible smart metering, multi-energy metering, and personal energy management. In addition, features and functions can be upgraded in the future through remote software upgrades.

Communication to the Gridstream AIM system is carried out using GPRS and PLC connection. Integration to the utility’s Customer Management System is facilitated by the use of Landis+Gyr’s AIMIA integration tool. AIMIA enables seamless data flow to the utility’s data management systems, resulting in accurate, consumption-based billing and efficient reporting.

“The build-up stage of AMM implementations in Finland is now gaining full speed. The government regulation reached its final form in spring 2009 and utilities are beginning preparations to meet the requirements of covering 80 percent of households with smart meters by the end of 2013,”  says Ari Tolonen, CEO at Landis+Gyr Finland.
